But who are these children and why are they there?
Start the quizStreet children are not easy to count. Estimates of their number differ widely, ranging anywhere from 30 to 170 million, with the most quoted figures being between 100 to a 150 million. Some present low numbers in order to hide the problems, others want to exaggerate and sensationalize the situation.

All of these can be street children. Any child who spends a significant proportion of their time on the streets is considered a street child. Whether they have parents or not. Whether they have a home to go to or not. Whether they work 6 hours in a market stall or 18 hours in a factory cutting threads from jeans.

All of these are reasons why children decide to move to the streets. On top of this, other reasons include lack of opportunity, violence within a community, neglect, hopelessness, the hope for a better future, just to name a few. Every child has their own unique story for how they have ended up on the streets.
NextNobody really knows. Due to the almost constant transition of street children, their lack of birth registration and general invisibility of this group within societies, it is almost impossible to know where the largest concentration of street children is.
